The Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, directed by Sebastián Franquis, has informed this Thursday of the progress that is being carried out in the remodeling and expansion project of the port of Gran Tarajal, in Fuerteventura, with the objective of improving the security and berthing conditions of the port facilities.

This was communicated by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Gustavo Santana, in a meeting with the mayoress of Tuineje, Esther Hernández, to "advance on the proposals made so far as a result of communication between administrations to coordinate and promote this project". .

The main action proposal that is foreseen in the area, projected by the Ministry, focuses on the extension in a straight line of the existing breakwater by about 280 meters, maintaining its same width, but allowing a remodeling of the bottom of the dock to reduce the connection with the inner dock that is intended for fishing and recreational activities.

"With this measure, it is possible to increase the degree of shelter in the port and provide Gran Tarajal with a safe berthing line to accommodate large ships," he says.

According to the Government, "the creation of this dam will allow the different areas of operation -commercial, fishing and recreational- to be separated in order to reduce interference between them and achieve greater security, capacity and quality of services for users and visitors. ”. Thus, the inner dock will continue to be used for fishing or recreational boats, improving the existing services for the sector.

Finally, within the works to be undertaken, the reorganization of the land area of the port itself is contemplated to adapt it to the new benefits, through the creation of commercial and leisure areas close to the urban center of Gran Tarajal and that "will make it possible to boost its activity ”.

At this meeting, the vice-counselor informed the municipal corporation that, in the coming weeks, this project will go to public information so that people interested in it can present allegations, observations and queries through the project's public information process.

The Ministry of Public Works awarded the drafting of this project to the joint venture formed by Berenguer Ingenieros, Evalua Soluciones Ambientales and HIDTMA, for a total amount of 264,825 euros.

This project, which has been coordinated with the local administration of Tuineje and the fishermen's association of the area, will provide a definition to the works that will be undertaken in the port and will have support for the environmental processing of these works.

Hotel Gran Tarajal

The mayoress of Tuineje, Esther Hernández, has received at the Town Hall representatives of the company that promotes the construction of a hotel and apartments in the area of El Aceitún, in Gran Tarajal on two plots totaling 50,000 square meters and listed in planning for hotel and non-hotel use.

In total, the creation of some 1,000 accommodation places is expected, which would provide a boost to the hotel offer in the municipality of Tuineje, "which has been stagnant for decades," according to Mayor Esther Hernández.

"This type of facility not only contributes to generating economy through the tourist activity itself, but also allows the creation of jobs," highlights Hernández. Forecasts suggest that these establishments could create just over 200 direct jobs.

First Lieutenant Rita Díaz and the Councilor for Tourism, Nélida Padilla, also participated in the meeting with Javier Granados, administrator of the promoting company, and the architect José Manuel Alastuéy. The estimates of the promoters place the investment at approximately 80 million euros.

The meeting has served to know the details of the project and to analyze at a technical level and in a preliminary way that the project conforms to the municipal planning. The promoters are right now in the final phase of drafting the basic construction projects in order to request the construction license from the City Council.

Rita Díaz points out that "this type of private project is what the municipality of Tuineje needs, to help diversify the economy and create jobs here."

For her part, the Councilor for Tourism, Nélida Padilla, points out that "with this project Tuineje would reinforce its tourist weight and we could intensify the promotion of the municipality because we will have more capacity to receive more tourism."
